PERIO EXAM AND CHARTING
One of the most important parts of your COMPREHENSIVE EXAM is the periodontal screening. During this procedure, the dentist checks the over-all health of the gums and bone that support the teeth.
A periodontal screening is completed using a combination of a visual examination, DIGITAL X-RAYS to measure bone density and height, and a periodontal probe. A periodontal probe is a round-ended ruler that measures the 'pockets' surrounding the teeth. Gum measurements in the 1 to 3mm range are healthy, meaning that you can clean them at home using a manual or electric toothbrush and floss. 4mm pockets are the sign of beginning gum disease, and 5mm pockets and above are more serious and indicate advancing gum disease.
Generally, patient's cannot clean out pockets that are 4mm and deeper. This allows calculus or tarter and toxins to form on the roots. The calculus acts as hotels for bacteria and is a constant irritant to the body which often leads to bone loss.
We use the information from the periodontal examination to determine the best treatment for your return to health. These pocket measurements are rechecked at your subsequent hygiene appointments by the hygienist. Many other factors such as bleeding of the gums, recession and mobility are closely evaluated.
